Traditional Coffee Roaster in Ulu Kimanis

It was quite an interesting discovery of a traditional roaster at a less-traveled areas in Sabah-Ulu Kimanis.

Mr Wong Fui An, 50, made into headlines in January, 2020 when his coffee aroma attracted the attention of Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal who was campaigning for the candidate contesting for Kimanis parliamentary seat.

But, it doesn't mean that the business was only there at that time. It has been there since three decades ago and he has been supplying the coffee beans and powder in bulks to local coffee sellers.

During the campaign time, I made time to drop by his place to get to know more of the traditional coffee method because I met a contemporary roaster before

When he spoke in Chinese with his nephew, he sounded like Chinese from China. Then, he told me that the family is actually Tianjin descendant, thus the accent.

Wong was very keen to explain step-by-step and some general information about coffee and roasting process.

I'm surprised that although Tenom Coffee brand products have always been around in the market, but Wong said actually most coffee beans are being imported from other places.

For his business, most of the beans are from Indonesia (#robusta) and Ranau (#Arabica).

Wong's family learn to roast coffee beans from Hainam people. For a success recipe, the roaster has to follow the measurement, temperature and time formula.

Do you know the sugar roasted with beans and margarine is meant to darken the beans, instead of sweeten them?

He sells black coffee kopi O at RM20/kg and arabica white coffee at RM42/kg.
