Coffee tasting at Masada Bed & Breakfast.

What is better than drinking coffee? It is chatting with a friendly barista that brews your coffee.

Recently, many Facebook friends are posting about this Mount Kinabalu Coffee and having the beverage at above Bed and Breakfast.

My impression was could it be that they are referring to a known brand SABARICA that also sources its beans from the same areas? A check at Facebook showed that it is another brand.

I whatsapp-ed the owner whether I could drop by for the coffee, and he gladly asked around what time I would be arrived. When I reached, he (Hunter) and his to-be-a-teacher sister were already there brewing coffee.

Hunter seemed like anticipating that I would be taking pictures here and there...He just focused with his espresso machine to serve perfect brew for me.

He got excited to make perfect latte art, too.

It is the second week that he is into brewing espresso drinks. For once, a barista came over and showed him how to brew espresso-based drinks. After that, Youtube is his teacher.

Hunter made me single-shot espresso, cappuccino and Kopi O.

Coffee tasting experience

Any topics about coffee, especially beans that are from locals, always excite me.  For many years, Tenom coffee has been dubbed as one of the must-try Sabah products.

But, recently, I learned from other baristas, roasters and coffee aficionados that there are not much coffee beans, which belong to robusta type, still available in Tenom. Mostly are imported from Indonesia.

When Hunter told about his hometown's Arabica Coffee, the insight did influence the way I appreciate my three glasses of coffee. I like it.

Instead of using machine to roast and grind it, he is still using traditional methods to process those beans which include using charcoals to roast them.

This complimentary coffee tasting session was indeed exclusive, as he could only do so with the limited availability of beans.

The next round will be after they harvest the new batch of beans around July.

What is Mount Kinabalu Coffee (according to its FB page)

About 30 years ago, 65% of the residents of Kg. Kiau Nuluh planted Arabica coffee (at the highland) but due to low market value and difficulty selling the coffee beans at that time, 99% of that 65% give up on their Arabica Coffee Farm (today most of their farms have turned into a secondary forest).

Mr. Ginsos and Mdm. Sabiah, who make up the 1% continues to preserve their farm until today.

When Mount Kinabalu Coffee Farmstay established in October last year, their coffee farms and coffee beans slowly gain a place in the customer's heart.
Now, many villagers start to re-open their abandoned coffee farms and many have started to plant new seeds.

So, we hope Mount Kinabalu Coffee will continue to shine and one day became a well-known brand that truly make an impact on the community.
