A Chinese-Malaysian contemporary artist expresses her heritage and Chinese diasporic consciousness through artwork.
Red Hong Yi, known as “the artist who paints without a paintbrush”, creates mixed media installations by reinterpreting everyday materials through the accumulation of objects.
By combining traditional craftsmanship and digital technology, she creates works that consider perceptual habits and preconceptions on the chosen objects and subjects.
This time, she collaborates with UNIQLO to celebrate Malaysian Kopitiams through "The Kopitiam Series".
Kopitiam or traditional coffee shops deeply ingrained in the Malaysian food culture that serve tasty, quick and inexpensive no-frills drinks and dishes.
The Kopitiam Series
Red uses her signature coffee painting technique with the bottom of a coffee cup to paint a variety of foods, drinks and scenes inspired by the Kopitiam culture.
Kopitiams have seen its foot traffic greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This series highlights these humble businesses and celebrates its significance in the Malaysian culture.
