Choose to reuse with WWF/H&M

In Malaysia, 97% of the water used for domestic, industry and agriculture are sourced from surface water (i.e. streams and rivers). Pollution is one of the biggest threats to our rivers and improper waste disposal is a major contributor to the pollution problem.
“To create a more sustainable fashion future, we need to take the lead by tackling some of the most significant challenges that are facing our planet and society.

"However, great change can only be achieved with collaboration. Through this partnership with WWF-Malaysia, we want to encourage our customers to reduce waste and consequently find long term sustainable solutions for our ecosystem,” says Fredrik Famm, Country Manager of South East Asia at H&M.

“According to the Malaysian Department of Environment’s Environmental Quality Report 2017, 11% of the 477 rivers monitored were found to be polluted.

"One of the causes of this pollution is the dumping of waste into the rivers, with single-use plastic being a major culprit. Through this partnership with H&M, we hope the customers will switch from single-use plastic bags to reusable shopping bags. We also hope that other businesses will follow H&M’s lead in promoting sustainable efforts,” says Norizan Mohd Mazlan, WWF-Malaysia’s Head of Conservation for Peninsular Malaysia.

Starting from 25 July this year, H&M will start charging RM0.20 for the use of every plastic or paper shopping bag at all our stores in Malaysia.
This move is part of H&M’s circular packaging strategy, which consists of longer-term measures to reduce its plastic use and covers circular design where all packaging should be reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. With this in place, we aim to encourage our customers to join us in sustainable actions by bringing their own reusable bags or purchasing them from our stores if they do not already own one.
All proceeds collected from the purchase of plastic or paper shopping bags will be donated to WWF-Malaysia’s project to safeguard freshwater resources by reducing waste footprint in Setiu Wetlands in Terengganu and in the Klang Valley. This project will start on 25 July 2019 and will run for one year.

The partnership aims to increase the public's understanding of solid waste issues and management by conducting social surveys, organising education talks and doing river clean-ups. It also aims to promote actions to reduce, recycle and reuse solid waste through campaigns on reducing single-use plastics. This is carried out by setting up recycling facilities in selected locations.
