KOTA KINABALU: The 4th surfing festival in Sabah this year hopes to improve the performance of local surfers and seek talents for international games.

The three-day festival, which is organised by Sabah Surfing Association and Rip Curl, will begin from Dec 22 and to be held at Tanjung Simpang Mengayau in Kudat.

Its association president Mohd Zurqaany Zahari said that the festival was last held in 2017.

“This year will be the fourth festival and about 40 participants from Sabah, peninsular Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia are expected to compete in the three categories- Open, Master and Grom.

“There will also be three qualified International Surfing Association judges to be involved in the festival,”he said during a press conference here yesterday.

He added during the previous years, international renowned surfers had attended some of the festival, including Indonesian professional surfer Dedi Gun and another Bali surfer Wayan Dharma Putra.

“Such festival gives opportunity for surfing enthusiasts to step up their games as they can learn from each other.
In Sabah, there are potential and talented local surfers but there are a lot more to improve.

“This time, an event company Safari would also be looking for talented grom (under 16) surfers to be groomed.

“We are also hoping to find surfers from Sabah that can represent Malaysia for tournament such as the SEA Games” said Mohd Zurqaany, who is also the president of Persatuan Luncur Ombak Malaysia.

Besides competition, the festival will also organise a rip current awareness programme, surf clinics, free surf movie screening and loads of fun-filled activities for the family.
